The new rules are aimed at those vehicles that are 50 years old or older
Rules for the registration of vintage vehicles have been formalised and vintage vehicle owners will now be able to register their vehicles in a hassle-free manner. However, this rule is applicable to only those vehicles which are older than 50 years.
Under the new rules, vintage car owners will be allowed to retain their old number, or apply for a new one. In case of the latter, they will be given a number under a special series. The number will be in this format - XX VA YY AAAA. XX will be the state code, VA will stand for vintage vehicle and YY will be a two-letter series. The AAAA will be a four digit number between 0001 and 9999.

For a fresh registration, the owners will have to pay a fee of Rs 20,000 for a new VA series registration. However, the fee is only Rs 5,000 for the re-registration of a vehicle. Vehicle owners will also be required to furnish an insurance policy, bill of entry in case of imported vehicles, and an old RC in case of an already registered vehicle along with the application.
Guidelines have also been listed for what constitutes a vintage vehicle. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, “All 2/4 wheelers, 50+ years old, maintained in their original form and which have not undergone any substantial overhaul, shall be defined as Vintage Motor Vehicles.”

Once you have gone through the entire process, the concerned state registering authority shall issue a certificate of registration within 60 days. However, there is a catch. Vintage vehicles will not be allowed to run on public roads for regular or commercial purposes.
