Mahindra recently registered the name ‘Scorpio Sting’ for one of its offerings

  • Third-gen Mahindra Scorpio could be called Scorpio Sting.

  • It will get Mahindra’s newly developed 2.0-litre turbo petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine options with manual and automatic transmissions.

  • Launch expected in mid-2021.

  • The existing second-gen model could remain on sale as a cheaper alternative.

Apart from testing the next-gen Scorpio, Mahindra now seems to have finalised a name for the new SUV. Mahindra has reserved the name, ‘Scorpio Sting’ as a trademark which naturally hints towards the title of the upcoming SUV. The SUV has borne the name Scorpio for 17 years now.

The new-gen Mahindra Scorpio is expected to reach dealerships by mid-2021. It is likely to be based on a new or updated version of the present ladder-frame chassis. It will feature a fresh dashboard layout with a bigger touchscreen infotainment unit and some contemporary features. The third-gen Scorpio is also expected to get added safety features since the current one is only available with dual front airbags.

The next-gen Scorpio will be powered by both petrol and diesel engines. Mahindra debuted two new engines with the Thar, both of which will also be found under the hood of the new Scorpio. The petrol option will be Mahindra’s 2.0-litre turbo unit from the new mStallion family, while the diesel option will be the new all-aluminium 2.2-litre engine. Apart from a 6-speed manual transmission as standard, both engines will also get a 6-speed automatic option.

The new-gen Mahindra Scorpio will be the only offering in the compact SUV segment that sits on a ladder-frame chassis. It’s priced from Rs 11.97 lakh to Rs 15.75 lakh but we can expect a hike when it’s launched. It will rival similarly priced SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Nissan Kicks. With Mahindra planning to add a suffix to its name, the existing second-gen SUV could remain on sale in limited variants as a cheaper alternative.
