The current facelifted model has adopted Mercedes-Benz’s new nomenclature and the ‘ML-Class’ is now known as the ‘GLE-Class’.
First spy shots of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLE Class have emerged, and the vehicle was reportedly being tested at the automaker research and development facility center in Germany. The mid-life update for the ML-Class came with the new nomenclature, while the ‘GLE’ moniker was born last year. Expect the next-generation to arrive in 2018, with sales commencing globally from late 2018 or 2019. The new fourth-generation model will be codename the ‘W 167’ since the current third-generation was codenamed the ‘W 166’. Expect the updated GLE Coupe to follow soon after.
It appears as if the next-gen model is at an initial stage of development and several of its body parts are faux. Speaking of the 2015 GLE Class, the German automaker did try to design it in line with the current design language by altering its face, but the rear profile was devoid of any major changes. The upcoming model will be in complete sync with the latest avatars such as the GLC from the three-pointed star automaker.
The first generation ML-Class, which made its debut in 1997 with the movie Jurassic Park 'The Lost World' was a body-on-frame SUV. The automaker adopted the monocoque architecture with the second-generation, surprisingly, the current third-generation also features the same. The upcoming fourth-gen ‘W 167’ GLE Class will adopt the Mercedes-Benz’s new lightweight Modular High Architecture. The vehicle is also expected to slightly grow in size compared to the ongoing model, since there is a completely new offering — the GLC Class, which sits between the entry-level GLA Class and the GLE Class. Increased dimension will help a layman differentiate better between the three SUVs.
Mechanically, since it is the ‘E Class’ of SUVs — as the name denotes the same, the SUV will get updated powertrains and transmission which made its debut with the 2017 Mercedes Benz E Class including brand new an all-aluminum unit 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel.
