BMW, the German luxury car manufacturer has announced a three cylinder engine, which is scheduled to be unveiled at the LA Motor Show in November. The company will also unveil the next-generation MINI, which also gets the same three-cylinder engine. An another 4-cylinder engine will also be on offered, which is expected to power the Cooper S models.

Next-generation MINI to get 3-cylinder engine

Both engines are based on BMW's new modular engine design, where each cylinder displaces 0.5-litres, and the engines are turbocharged and direct injected. The 1.5-litre three cylinder engine, which is likely to power the base Cooper model, is expected to develop 134bhp and 230Nm of top torque,

The turbocharged engine gives 13bhp more power than the regular 1.6-litre in-line four cylinder engine in the current Mini Cooper. However, torque sees the major improvement, as the 3-cylinder engine develops 230Nm of top torque at 1250rpm, while the regular engine gives only 154Nm of torque at 4250rpm.

The other 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine is capable of developing 189bhp of top power and 280Nm of peak torque. There is a slight increase in power, though it is expected to be more frugal than the regular one. MINI is likely to retain the same six-speed manual transmission gearbox, however the automatic version of the vehicle is expected to get the six gears or few might also get the seven-speed automatic as well.

The new Mini models are expected to sit on the new front wheel drive platform, which offers more interior space and easier access to the back seat. It is also speculated that the next Mini will also offer a suspension with adjustable damping.
