Nissan confirms electric car Leaf for India

Nissan is aggressively exploring the possibility to capture untapped electric car market in India with its global success Nissan Leaf. Currently MREV's (Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicle) Mahindra Reva is the unrivaled electric car on Indian roads. The monogamy of Reva might be challenged by Nissan's new highway capable electric car Nissan leaf, which has a reputation of world's top selling car with wide markets in Japan and US. Global sale of Nissan Leaf accounted to 21,000 units last year making Nissan undisputed global leader in electric car market.

Kiminobu Tokuyama, MD and CEO, Nissan Motor India stated in an interview that Nissan is studying the feasibility of introducing Nissan Leaf in the Indian market and have an aggressive launch plan in pipeline. He refrained from laying out a timeline owing to the dependency on Indian government for introducing eco friendly cars in India. Tokuyama clarified that Nissan expects government initiative in form of infrastructure and subsidies which they have received in other countries to make Nissan Leaf commercially viable. Nissan has already created a stable market with their Nissan Micra and Sunny models. Micra bagged sale of 1,855 units, while Nissan Sunny accounted for 3,218 units.

To sum up Nissan managed to triple its sales figures from last year. But boosting domestic sales is on priority list of Nissan. Currently, 85% of total production is export. Tokuyama revealed that Nissan is widening dealership network in India by increasing number of outlets from 51 to 100 by 2013. They are speculating a 1,00,000 sales figure by 2013-14. In addition, Nissan disclosed plans to launch a MUV Nissan Evalia, expected in august and a compact car below Micra, which is a long haul. Nissan Evalia, reengineered from a van sold by Nissan to suit Indian market, will compete with MUV like Toyota Innova.
