Post the launch of Nissan Sunny sedan on Tuesday with the petrol engine, the Japanese auto brand intends to bring forward the launch of the diesel variant to the earliest. Among the petrol and diesel cars; the sales ratio of the petrol cars to diesel, which earlier stood to be 45:55 has now reached to 20:80. Observing the trend in India, the corporate VP of Nissan for Middle East and India has asked the engineers to speed up the things for an early launch of the Nissan Sunny diesel variant before the end of the current fiscal year.

After decontrolling the petrol price in last June, the OMCs have been frequently revising the petrol prices to bring parity with the international crude oil price. After the hike in petrol price by Rs 3.14, the current gap in the diesel and the petrol price now stands to be Rs 26. This has triggered the auto makers to ramp up their diesel car production to launch more diesel cars, at the same time placing the petrol car prices more competitively. Toyota Motors Corp had recently launched the diesel variants of Toyota Etios sedan and Toyota Etios Liva hatch after a lukewarm response received by their petrol variants in the market. Honda Siel cars has offered major discounts on their petrol model cars including Honda City to overcome the demand for the diesel variants.

However, the market experts believe that the consumers inclination towards the diesel cars is not permanent and once the gap between the diesel and petrol prices is reduced, the change in the market dynamics in imminent. Hence, the Japanese auto manufacturers like Nissan and Suzuki are most likely to delay their investments in the diesel technology and would rather seek to buy the technology from the European manufacturers like Fiat, for example. Dinesh Jain of Hover Automotive Ltd, a Nissan dealer in the country has said that Nissan envisages bringing the diesel variant of the Nissan Sunny as early as possible against the usual trend adopted by any auto brand to launch a new variant with a gap of at least nine months. With Nissan Sunny price of Rs 5.78 –Rs 7.78 lakhs, the sedan is likely to compete against the rivals Toyota Etios sedan, Mahindra Verito and Maruti Swift Dzire. The Japanese manufacturer expects to sell around 40,000 units by the end of this fiscal year.
