Nissan India to introduce 3-4 small cars in coming years

Nissan India which has recently launched Nissan Sunny sedan and had launched Nissan Micra hatchback some time back in India, the auto biggie is now considering launching more compact cars in India. Research shows that 7 in 10 cars sold in India are small cars. While competition is intense in the premium hatchback segment, the sub-Rs 5 lakh category accounts for 40%-45% of the small car market in India.

Cheaper model of cars are the topmost priority of every carmaker in India. The fairly good sales of small cars in Indian market encourage car producers to concentrate on them than any other segment. So, comparatively a new player, Nissan Motors will drive more hatchbacks for Indian audience. The Japanese car maker Nissan Motor will launch 3 to 4 compact cars which will be priced below 5 lakh. In the next 3 to five years these cars may hit Indian roads. Nissan India is undergoing talks with Bajaj Auto in this regard. If the talks turn positive the company will be in a position to launch three to four compact cars within three to five years.

Nissan may launch a compact car on the K2 platform by 2013-14 and price it at Rs 3-4 lakh and this will be followed by an even cheaper compact car likely to be priced at Rs 2-3 lakh. The 2-3 lakh small car is being designed by Hinduja Group's engineering arm Defiance. Gilles Normand, Corporate Vice-President, Africa, West Asia and India at Nissan Motors said that the company wants to have a competitive offering in the Indian market the possibilities of which range from the very bottom of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh. Denying giving the specifics of the cars he added that Nissan India is open to partnerships. This does not mean that the company will not launch vehicles under other segment at all. By 2013, Nissan Motors plans to launch at least one vehicle in every segment - small cars, SUV, MPV and luxury cars. Among them Renault Modus hatchback and Renault Duster SUV are the most anticipated one.
