The Nissan leaf, which has already grabbed various awards in the past, has added one more to its list, this time for being the fastest car over a measure mile (1.6km) in reverse. The stunt driver Terry Grant has driven the Nissan Leaf backwards up the famous Goodwood hillclimb course at an average speed of 88.5 kmph in 1 minute 37.02 seconds. Having set the record on Friday, the opening day of the Festival, Terry went on to smash his time on Saturday and Sunday, shaving an amazing 26 seconds off Friday’s time.

Terry has set a world record last year as well by driving a Nissan Juke up the hill on two wheels. Sharing his victory experience he said: “I had a great car at my disposal – with direct drive from the electric motor to its wheels, the Nissan LEAF can, in theory, go as fast backwards as it can forwards There were times I wasn’t sure I was coming or going.  However, thanks to the LEAF’s low centre of gravity – the batteries are an integral part of the car’s floor – the car is extremely stable, no matter which direction it’s travelling.”

The Nissan Leaf has previously won the European, Japanese and World car of the year award in 2011. Having sold more than 32,000 units globally, Nissan Leaf is the world's most selling electric vehicle. It has also been awarded five starts in Euro NCAP tests that make it one of the safest cars on the road. Having an AC motor, it produces the maximum of 107bhp and 280Nm of torque and it has got the ability to go 145kmph.

A normal charger takes about 8 hours to get its lithium-ion battery charged 100 percent, while a quick charger takes 30 minutes to charge it up to 80%. There are speculations, that the Nissan leaf might come to India as well, but not before 2013. If it comes, it will be competing with the likes of Mahindra Reva NXR.
