Which of two petrol-only sub-4m SUVs suits your needs and budget the best?
Nissan has launched the Magnite SUV at an introductory starting price of Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom India). We have already pitted the new Magnite against the best-selling sub-4m SUV, the Sonet, so now let’s now compare it with the petrol-only Maruti Vitara Brezza. Let’s start by looking at the specifications of each:
Dimension:
Nissan Magnite |
Maruti Vitara Brezza |

Wheelbase |
2500mm |
2500mm |
Boot Space |

328L |
-
The Vitara Brezza is longer, wider and taller than the Magnite. However, the Magnite takes the lead when it comes to boot space.
-
Both the SUVs have an identical wheelbase at 2500mm.
Engines: Both the SUVs here are petrol-only offerings but Nissan offers choice of two while Brezza only comes with one.

-
Vitara Brezza’s 1.5-litre litre engine is the biggest and most powerful engine here That said, the Magnite’s 1.0-litre turbo engine makes the most torque.
-
All the three engines get a 5-speed manual transmission as standard. While the Magnite gets an option of CVT with the 1.0-litre turbo engine, the Vitara Brezza is available with an option of a 4-speed torque converter automatic.
-
In terms of fuel economy, the Magnite’s 1.0-litre turbo engine is the most frugal engine with a manual transmission. With the automatic, the Brezza offers better fuel economy, thanks in part to the mild-hybrid tech.

Verdict: The Magnite continues to be our pick. It gets a lot more features than the Vitara Brezza and the premium it attracts for those features is justified in our opinion. This variant of the Magnite is significantly down on performance in comparison to the Brezza but the extra comforts make up for it. Nissan is the only one to offer a 360-degree camera in this segment, even though the resolution is not the best.

Verdict: The Magnite continues to be our pick. It’s the top-spec Magnite automatic variant against the base-spec Brezza automatic variant after all. For a premium of Rs 10,000, the Magnite also gets connected car tech but the premium is not justified in our opinion. Magnite buyers can also opt for the Tech Pack accessory kit for Rs 39,000 which further adds features like wireless charging, air purifier, puddle lamps, ambient lighting and JBL speakers.
The Magnite’s aggressive pricing is available to those who order one before the end of the year and on paper, it offers a lot of value for money while being more affordable than the Maruti Vitara Brezza.
