No smooth drive for electric cars

A blend of auto major companies like Mahindra Renault, Nissan, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW have planned to develop electric cars that price above $20,000 per car. These car companies, along with Reva are understood to be working with the Central and state governments in order to develop infrastructure and get tax sops for better pricing. Recently, Reva has tied up with independent auto designer Dilip Chhabria to work on it's looks and has tied up with General Motors India to develop electric vehicles for the Indian market.

Reva, intends to sell 30k vehicles in three years. The electric vehicles produced by Nissan and Mahindra Renault will be powered by batteries developed by AESC, a Nissan-NEC JV. K Tokuyama, MD and CEO of Nissan Motor India also told that they want to launch the EVs in the Indian market and a lot will depend on government support.

Mahindra Renault intends to start with Fluence and Kangoo models too. Nissan’s electric car Leaf is roped for a 2010 launch. GM in the US has announced that its new electric car, Volt will hit the roads by 2010.
