Starting today (November 1, 2022), wearing rear seat belts in a car will be mandatory for passengers in Mumbai, the City Traffic Police have announced. If the rear seat passengers are found violating the rule, they will be fined an amount of Rs 1,000.

This rule has been introduced keeping in mind the recent death of Cyrus Mistry, the former CEO of Tata Group, who passed away in a road accident while seated at the back without the seat belt strapped on.

The Mumbai Traffic Police is observing a 10-day seat belt awareness drive, during which the public will be informed about the rule. From November 11, violators will be caught and they will attract a fine. Cars which do not offer rear seat belts will need to be equipped with them as soon as possible.
Most cars sold in India offer three-point seat belts for occupants of the rear outboard seats and a lap belt for the rear middle passenger. However, the government is planning to standardise three-point seat belts and seat belt reminders for all seating positions in the rear of all cars.

The Delhi Government has also started imposing fines when people are found not wearing a seat belt and soon this rule will be adopted by other cities and States, like Karnataka. This rule should improve the safety of car passengers in the case of an accident. Bear in mind that the government will also be introducing the mandatory six airbags rule that was supposed to be effective from this October, next year.
