On-street Parking Charges to be Levied in Delhi says High Court

Gradually, everything in India is getting expensive, first fuel, then cars and now parking. The National Capital is one city where there can be a hike on the already inflated parking prices. The High Court has proposed new norms on parking cars in India’s capital – Delhi and if this proposal gets implemented parking cars would become an expensive affair. This hike in parking prices has been suggested by the Special Task Force formed by the High court of Delhi and would be applicable on all on-street parking and all public roads even the ones that run across the residential colonies of Delhi.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been asked by STF to complete a feasibility study on the levying of on-street parking charges and revert with the same within next two months. If this proposal gets implemented and this new rule comes into action, the on-street parking charges could be as high as Rs. 50 for three hours followed by Rs. 20 per hour for some colonies of Delhi. The charges may vary with locations and for some locations the base charges applicable could be Rs. 30 in the non-peak hours.

This action is an attempt by the Special Task Force to discourage people from buying more cars and avoid unnecessary clogging of the city. As per STF, the increased one-time prices on the purchase of the cars do not discourage people from buying more cars and the only way the ever-increasing Delhi traffic can be curbed is through the application of such rigorous measures. Many countries all over the world levy street parking charges but this rule will have to face a lot of opposition in the city like Delhi, states MCD. The proposal was put across by Delhi High Court but MCD has been working on this; last year also MCD rejected similar proposal of hike on parking charges. The final call on this matter is in the hands of Special Task Force which will be based on the feasibility study done by the Delhi Corporation.
