The long-living partnership of Mercedes-Benz and its performance arm AMG will be reaching a new milestone next year by turning 50. In anticipation of this, several rumours were doing the rounds on the net sometime back that Mercedes-AMG will be celebrating this grand occasion by presenting a ‘hypercar’ that will be equipped with proper F1 hardware. Well, on the eve of 2016 Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz has come out in the open to officially ‘stamp’ the development of one such hypercar. Coming straight from the horse’s mouth, Tobias Moers, head of AMG expressed, “It will set a new benchmark,” referring to the hypercar which will be developed by both AMG and Mercedes-Benz F1 engineers working in tandem.
It is set to make use of the hybrid powertrain which powers the current-gen F1 race car. However, keeping it real and driveable on the roads and not just on the racetrack, the 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged engine to be used will be down-tuned to an extent. But make no mistake, the power figures are slated to exceed 1000PS!
Considering the overall aesthetics of this hypercar, it will possess a carbon-fibre body and chassis and is likely to carry a mid-engine, two-seater configuration. Going by the extensive work that will go into making this hypercar, it will not be wrong to expect prices to shoot for the stars, making it the most expensive car amongst all Mercedes-AMG products. After all, guess who will be test-driving and sharing inputs during its testing phase? None other than Mercedes F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Robert. So by when can we see this enthralling machine enter production? Moers has the answer, “It is about two years from production.” On that note, we surely feel Mercedes-AMG will be bringing in something completely bonkers this time.
