Mercedes-Benz has now begun local assembly of AMG models in India, with the yet-to-be-launched AMG GLC 43 Coupe facelift becoming the first AMG car to be made on Indian soil. It is now expected to be soon launched in India, with Mercedes-Benz revealing its price to be around Rs 80 lakh. AMG versions are usually the go-fast versions of standard Mercedes models.
If the AMG GLC 43 had been brought in through the CBU (completely built units) channel, its cost would have crossed the Rs 1 crore mark due to taxation. The move to make the AMG GLC 43 in India is aimed at first time performance car buyers who are looking to add a bit of zing to their drive, and enter the Mercedes-AMG family.
Under its hood, the AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe has a 3.0-litre biturbo V6 that cranks out 385PS and 520Nm. There is a 9-speed automatic gearbox that drives all four wheels through the all-wheel-drive system. With all of this, the AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe can go from 0-100kmph in just 4.7 seconds.
Mercedes-AMG currently sells eight different models in India that include the 43, 53, 63 and GT R model series, all spread out across body types. Having started performance car production in India, Mercedes aims to take the lead in its sales too. It is still a niche market with only a handful of players such as BMW’s M Division and Audi Sport bening the players, none of whom manufacture in India but it is a segment which has been on the rise in the last few years.
