REVA, the only maker of electric cars in India, is aiming to expand its operations to 50 countries by year 2012. Mr  Chetan Maini,  Managing Director of REVA Electric India said in an interview given to the leading business news paper of the country that, company is aiming to expand its business in 40 to 50 countries by year 2012.

Mr  Maini added that electric cars are need of the hour as a combination of several factors is now forcing people to use electric cars in India and around the world. First factor is the policy of the Indian government which is providing a high subsidy on electric cars. The Delhi government is providing the subsidy of 29.5 % on electric cars as the pollution in the city has increased to a dangerous level. Secondly, the components suppliers in the country are now focusing more on this segment with investing heavily in it. When the company started this business in India the concept was very new and people were not ready to accept the electric cars but now as the concept is not new and electric car are becoming popular around the world, the acceptance level towards the electric car is increasing day by day, Mr Maini concluded.

As the fuel cost rising at high rate, car makers around the world are investing more and more in electric car segment including Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi, and GM. Besides this many hybrid cars are registering a good sales figure in India including Toyota Prius, and Honda Civic Hybrid. With this, some upcoming cars in India will be added in this segment including a hybrid car from Tata.

Company is in the process of starting  a new environment friendly assembly plant in Bangalore which will have a capacity of 30,000 units per year. The plant is expected to be completed by this year end. The company is aiming to launch a new car and a new variant every year with new technologies.
