The Volkswagen (VW) board has decided to step on the gas to roll out two small cars in the next 24 to 30 months. Now Skoda Auto, a Volkswagen group company, is targeting a rollout in 2011. The company’s operation head and board member (sales & marketing) Thomas Kuehl said that the decision was taken on Tuesday. Now the company will launch two small cars one from VW stable and another from Skoda. Thomas said that the product development is underway.
The Skoda small car will be priced Rs 4 lakh while VW small is expected to carry Rs 7 lakh sticker. For the small car a vendor base was being developed near its plant at Aurangabad by the company. Like the same way the components would be sourced locally for the car but impost at present. The company is also going to introduce the new version of sedan Skoda Laura and estate version of Skoda Fabia. Acknowledging that Nano would change the way people perceive personal mobility, the Skoda official said once the Nano-mania subsides and the car gets established, it will send design teams of other auto manufactures back to the drawing board and encourage innovation. Nano will also make many European and American car manufacturers sit up and take notice of engineering capabilities of India because the impossible has been made possible by a local team.
