Skoda’s lineup in India has been a bit thin in 2020 with most new products scheduled for 2021. The most important offering for Skoda would be a compact SUV to tap into the segment’s popularity without breaking away from its premium brand image. Such a product was teased at Auto Expo 2020 as the VISION IN concept and after an interaction with Zac Hollis, CarDekho now has the timelines for its unveiling and launch in 2021.
The official name of the production-spec model will be announced in January 2021 while the market-ready car will be unveiled later in March. It is based on the VW Group’s MQB A0 modular platform that has been further localised for India. Showcased in its concept form, the VISION IN featured a wide multi-slat grille with sleek LED headlamps, with integrated daytime running lights and separate indicator units underneath. It has a striking presence with chunky bumpers, black cladding and muscular arches. A near-production, camouflaged test mule was spotted some weeks back and it looked a lot like the concept, complete with stylish 17-inch alloy wheels.
As a premium offering in the compact SUV segment dominated by Hyundai and Kia, the Skoda SUV will likely be feature laden as well. Its concept version featured a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display which could make it to production in the top variants while the central touchscreen infotainment system could be a 10.1-inch unit. It could also come with a panoramic sunroof, multiple airbags, connected car tech, and leatherette upholstery.
The Skoda SUV will be a petrol-only offering with two possible engine options: 1.0-litre TSI (115PS/200Nm) and 1.5-litre TSI (150PS/250Nm). Its smaller engine will get the choice of 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions as seen in the Polo while the more powerful engine will likely be offered with the 7-speed DSG automatic only.
Skoda’s compact SUV is slated to reach showroom floors by mid-2021 at an expected price of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 16 lakh. It will be taking on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Nissan Kicks and its own stablemate, the Volkswagen Taigun.
