Yes, we know the car in pictures looks nothing like a compact SUV or even a Polo for that matter. The shell is that of a Mk7 Golf, but what's interesting, lies beneath it.
Reports suggest that Volkswagen is testing the engine and drivetrain of the upcoming compact SUV. The high ground clearance is a dead giveaway of what's being tested. We know that the compact SUV will be based on Volkswagen's MQB platform, that underpins everything from the Polo to the Tiguan. The concept was powered by Volkswagen's 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol TSi motor that developed 110PS of power and 175Nm of peak torque. We expect the production version to house the same engine, along with a TDi diesel motor.
Speaking of looks, it will borrow design cues from the T-Cross Breeze concept that was showcased at Geneva earlier this year. If the concept seems too outlandish to you, take a look at the renderings which might be closer to what the vehicle will eventually look like.
India is likely to be among the target markets for the upcoming compact SUV. The vehicle is likely to be under four metres in length, which means it will feel right at home slugging it out with the Ford EcoSport, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, and the Mahindra twins, the TUV300 and the NuvoSport. We expect the compact SUV to reach our shores by late 2018. Expected price? Well, what do you think? Let us know through the comments section below.
