Talks fail 2,000 workers on strike at Maruti’s Manesar plant

Over 2, 000 worked remained on strike at the Maruti’s plant in Manesar today. The strike begun on Saturday after the workers went on strike from the second shift. With the strike on, Maruti faced a production loss of over 650 units in a day. About 1,300 units of Maruti cars are produced at this plant everyday. However, due to the holiday on Sunday there was no loss of production.

The workers demands include recognition of a new union of workers at the Manesar plant-Maruti Suzuki Employees Union (MSEU). Besides, the workers are also demanding continuation of the contract workers for the new units that are coming up inside this plant. In addition to it, the workers also want the Maruti management not to take any disciplinary action against the 11 office executive of the newly formed MSEU. Meanwhile, there have been three rounds of conciliation talks between Maruti’s management and the striking workers association but in vain. Aggrieved at the no outcome of talks, the workers have reportedly decided to continue strike till their demands are met.

Notably, the workers at Manesar formed a new union as the existing union Maruti Suzuki Kamgar Union has office bearers who belong to the Gurgaon facility. Workers believe that the Manesar and Gurgaon plants are different and issues at both the plants are also different and thus there should be separate union catering to the welfare of the workers. Meanwhile, it is also that the Maruti management has taken written oaths from workers that state that they are happy with the present union.

Notably, workers at the Manesar plant went on strike way back in 2000. The strike continued for three months. The existing plant at Manesar has a capacity of 3.5 lakh units a year while the Gurgaon facility has an annual capacity of 8.5 lakh units. Till now all the Maruti cars including Maruti Ritz, Maruti SX4, Maruti Swift and Maruti Kizashi are produced in the plants. Similarly there were also reports that Maruti is also thinking of setting up a plant in Gujarat.
