Tata Nano, the world’s cheapest car is being modified to make it readable for sale in U.S. The car is going under the process of modification to meet emissions and safety standards of U.S. The company has not disclosed the price but it is expected that the price would be more than the price charged in India. Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata group of companies has said that the car would take three years for US distribution.
Before Tata Nano can be sold in US the car’s 623cc would have to be retrofitted to meet U.S. pollution standards. The few things that have to be modified like airbags have to be added, the roof has to be strengthened and the front bumper has to be lengthened. These structural changes are required to meet the U.S. standards and some featured changes are appropriate for North American market. Tony Jones, associate vice president of the global automotive practice reported that Tata Technologies would participate in bringing the car up to U.S. standards.
The austere interior, with flat bucket seats, three knobs, a horizontal switch and a steering wheel, also would have to be changed to comply with U.S. safety standards.
In 2011, Tata Motors will launch a European version of the four-seat car that will cost about $8,000 and it is expected that U.S. would have a comparable price. Although if this price tag holds true, it would then also cost far less than the Hyundai Accent( $9,970) which is the car with lowest cost in U.S. according to the Edmunds.com automotive Web site. The price does not include shipping charges.
