Tata is on a mission to turn its image around! While the Tata Bolt and the Zest didn't do much for the Indian auto giant, the Tiago has been flying off the shelves. The Tiago's sedan sibling, codenamed Kite 5 (check spy shots!), is expected to grace showroom floors soon. To complete the brand makeover, Tata is looking at the entry level spectrum. The humble Nano is all set to get a makeover.
The prototype looks slightly different from the one spotted earlier. Recent spy shots indicate that the Nano will go upmarket. The silhouette looks more or less identical to the current Nano, save for minor tweaks made to the front profile. The masked fascia hides stubbier headlamps and a new bumper, which looks in line with the Nano Europa Concept.
The side and the rear haven't been messed with too much. Updates appear to be reworked side vents and a new rear bumper, with a prominent recess for the number plate. Tata could've used the facelift to introduce a rear defogger and a rear wiper. However, the mule sports neither. Whether these are incorporated in the production-spec version remains to be seen.
The interior is where Tata's designers have gone to town. The dashboard sports an entirely new design that is in line with what we've seen on a modern-day Tata, such as the Tiago. The instrument cluster is no longer centrally mounted and is placed conventionally. The updated dash design will also cause the Nano to lose the top-mounted twin gloveboxes and get a single (possibly large) glovebox mounted in the lower half. The feature list is unlikely to feature anything substantially different and will include the usual integrated music system with Bluetooth, front two power windows and power steering.
Mechanically, it may feature a new 3-cylinder engine, paired to a 5-speed transmission. An AMT is likely to be on offer as well. Tata is also testing an electric version of its small hatch, which could make a debut with the mid-life facelift as well.
It is good to see Tata consciously make the Nano shed its 'cheap car' tag. The car has become better with every single update, and this one looks no different. We expect a minor bump in pricing with the facelift as well.
