Tata Tiago is celebrating a new milestone. The hatchback has crossed the 5,00,000 unit sales mark. This makes it only the second Tata car to achieve this.
Tata Motors launched the Tiago back in 2016. Based on the modified version of the carmaker's X0 platform, the Tiago was powered by a range of inhouse engines. The hatch is made at the Indian carmaker’s Sanand facility in Gujarat. The car also marked a change in the design philosophy at Tata, which has resulted in the company adopting the design language that we know today. Interestingly, the last 1,00,000 units were achieved in just 15 months.
Then in 2020 Tata launched the facelift of the Tiago hatchback. Apart from the visual changes, the car now complied with the updated BS6 emission norms. In 2021, the Tiago was offered with a crossover trim under the NRG badge which sports external cladding, increased ground clearance (+10 mm), a new front bumper and dual exhaust pipes at the back. Looking at market demands, in 2022 Tata further launched the revolutionary Tiago iCNG and followed it up in 2023 with the Tiago EV, elevating the Tiago model range with modern powertrain and alternative fuel options.
Thus, we can say that the Tiago brand has grown by leaps and bounds and this is reflected by the number of customers who are opting for the hatchback. According to Tata, the average Tiago buyer is 35 years old and the urban-rural split in sales is 60-40. Women customers are also increasingly preferring the Tiago. Currently, they make up 10 percent of the total buyers. Another interesting stat is that 71 percent of Tiago buyers in FY 2023 are first time car owners.
In terms of features, the Tiago comes with projector headlamps, LED DRLs, 15-inch dual tone alloys, 7-inch touchscreen by Harman with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 8-speaker sound system, digital instrument cluster and more.
On the safety front, the Tata Tiago is the safest hatchback in the segment. The Tiago managed to secure a 4-star rating in crash tests performed by the Global New Car Assessment Program under the Safer Cars for India initiative. Tata offers dual airbags, parking camera with guidelines, tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS with EBD and corner stability control and speed-sensitive door locks on the Tiago.
The Tiago is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine that develops 86 PS @ 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 3,300 rpm. With a manual transmission, Tata claims a fuel economy of 20.01 km/l while the number stands at 19.43 km/l with the 5-speed AMT. The same engine is offered with a CNG fuel option as well which gives a mileage of 26.49 km/kg. The Tiago iCNG is the most powerful CNG car in its segment, with segment-first features such as ‘Direct Start in CNG Mode’ and a single ECU which ensures little or no loss in power while switching from petrol to CNG mode. It also sports features such as Autofuel Switch Over between petrol and CNG modes when either of the fuel levels are low, Thermal & Leak detection feature that switches to petrol mode in case of a fire and CNG gas leak, and a Microswitch that prevents the car from starting if the fuel lid is open.
The Tata Tiago, hence, is a popular choice thanks to its updated and fresh design, loaded interiors, multiple powertrain options and most importantly its 4-star GNCAP rating which makes it one of the safest hatchbacks in India!
