Takeaways
-
Tata is offering the Tiago NRG in a single top-spec variant hence the high entry price. The manual option is nearly a lakh more expensive than the top-spec Celerio X manual. Meanwhile, the Tiago NRG automatic option is pricier than the Celero X automatic by Rs 1.18 lakh.
-
The Tiago NRG is priced at a premium of upto Rs 20,000 over corresponding variants of the standard Tiago. It gets the same 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 86PS and 113Nm with the choice of a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT.
-
Its direct rival is the Maruti Celerio X which is a beefier version of the regular Celerio. They’re powered by a smaller and less powerful 1-litre petrol engine that produces 69PS and 90Nm. It is also available with 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT transmission but also gets the option of a CNG variant.
-
The Tiago NRG is also slightly better equipped than the Celerio X. However, Maruti is due to launch the next-gen Celerio soon which should be followed by a new Celerio X as well.

Other similarly sized hatchbacks like the Maruti Wagon R and Hyundai Santro are also more affordable than the Tiago NRG. The Wagon R top-spec is offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that makes 83PS and 113Nm while the Santro is powered by a 1.1-litre petrol engine making 69PS/99Nm. Both get the choice of 5-speed manual and AMT transmissions.
-
The top-spec Datsun GO petrol-automatic is also more affordable than the entry-level Tiago NRG. It has a less powerful 1.2-litre petrol engine that only makes 68PS and 104Nm but it's the only in the segment to offer a CVT automatic. Power output also increases slightly to 77PS with the automatic variant instead of the 5-speed manual.
-
The Ford Freestyle is another hatchback derivative that offers a more rugged exterior but it is a segment above the Tiago NRG. Its prices start from Rs 7.28 lakh which is a relatively small premium over the Tiago NRG petrol-automatic. Even though its an entry-level petrol-manual, it covers the basic feature requirements such as an infotainment system, rear view camera, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.
