The Kia EV6 battery pack was able to charge from 0 to 50 percent in just 20 minutes using a DC fast charger
The Kia EV6 is the carmaker’s first electric vehicle offering in India, introduced back in June 2022. Here, it gets a 77.4 kWh battery pack and the following powertrain choices: a single motor rear-wheel drive (229 PS/350 Nm), and a dual motor all-wheel-drive (325 PS/605 Nm) setup. The EV6 has an ARAI-claimed range of up to 708 km. Recently, we had the top-spec all-wheel-drive EV6 with us and we documented how long it took to be charged from 0 to 100 percent using a DC fast charger.
Charging Time
For our test, we had plugged the Kia EV6 into a 120kW DC fast charger with the battery at nearly 0 percent. Here’s how long it took to fully recharge the premium EV offering:

Takeaways
-
The Kia EV6 took exactly an hour to go from empty to a full charge.
-
That first half of the battery got topped up the fastest, while the second half took nearly twice as long. Overall, charging from 0-90 percent took 45 minutes, averaging that, 1 percent of charge just took half a minute.
-
At one point the charging rate went down from 118 kW to 7 kW and back again in a couple of minutes.
-
After the battery reached 85 percent charge, the charging rate reduced to 60 kW, and kept dropping gradually for about every 5 seconds, with the lowest recorded rate standing at 41 kW.
-
Once at 90 percent, the charging speed fell down to 35 kW to 40 kW, and at 93 percent, it hit 29 kW.
-
The last 5 percent of charge was completed in 10 minutes as the charging rate stood at 22 kW for 95 to 98 percent and 29 kW/30 kW for 99 to 100 percent.
Reason For A Drop In The Charging Rate
When your EV battery charge rate reaches 80 percent, the charging gets slower. This is most commonly observed when you use a DC fast charger, and the battery starts getting hot, which can negatively impact the battery’s longevity. So, slowing down the charging helps prevent overheating and keeps your battery in better shape. Also, the battery pack is like a bunch of cells packed together. Slower charging ensures that all these cells get charged up evenly.

Price And Rivals
The Kia EV6 is priced from Rs 60.95 lakh to Rs 65.95 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Its only direct rival is the far more affordable Hyundai Ioniq 5, but due to its price it also goes up against the BMW i4, Volvo XC40 Recharge and the upcoming Skoda Enyaq iV.
