Top automakers namely Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Nissan, Toyota and Ford are all focusing on the mini MPV (multi-purpose vehicle), segment these days. The segment is expected to see increased momentum this year and that's the main reason these auto makers are keen on making intelligent investments in this segment. Many companies are propelling new products to cater the segment.

The new mantra of driving volumes to sales seems to be focused on providing mini MPV's, public carriers like Van, the look and feel of a luxury car that could provide a seating capacity of 7-8 people and shelving it competitively at the right price quote. Big families who want a spacious car with a good fuel economy would be the target audience for the segment.

Different automakers are using different approach to build efficient vehicles that range from building completely new vehicles to developing the existing platforms. Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest car maker has already announced its mini MPV named Christened Concept RIII, that would be launched in 12-18 months and be built on a completely new platform.

Toyota, the Japan based Auti major would be building a mini MPV on the Etios platform that would be shelved below Toyota Innova. When contacted, deputy MD of Toyota Kirloskar Sandeep Singh said that the current focus of the company would be on the hatchback and sedan segment.

According to the industry sources, this segment is the best to focus on right now as it still remains an untapped segment and there is less competition there. Senior officials from many Car companies commented that this segment would help auto companies pull good margins and drive huge sales volumes.

Although many companies have hinted on their plans to cater to the MPV segment, the exact price range has not been finalised yet. Going by the speculations the mini MPV segment would be the next big thing in the Indian automobile market.
