Toyota Corolla Altis diesel, a much awaited car in the Indian market is all set to be launched on 21st of July. The new diesel variant of Corolla Altis will come loaded with a 1.4-litre turbo diesel D-4D power train which is capable of generating a maximum power of 90PS along with a peak torque of 190 Nm. The launch of a diesel version of Altis will give it an edge over its closest competitor Honda Civic, which is currently available in petrol version only.

Mr Sandeep Singh, Toyota Kirloskar Motors deputy MD (marketing), has recently stated that the diesel variant of Toyota Corolla Altis will give a further boost to their market share in India. He also added that the 1.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine version would see monthly numbers for the Altis going up to around 1100 units.

The Premium sedan segment in the Indian market is already witnessing a tussle between some of the most popular cars of this segment including the Volkswagen Jetta, Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic and Skoda Laura and the launch of Corolla Altis in diesel will do nothing but add fuel to this fire. Chevrolet Cruze which was launched in the Indian market last year, has emerged as the best selling sedan in this segment with its monthly sales crossing 800 units.

The factor that can provide an upper hand to Toyota Corolla Altis over its competitors in the premium car segment is its claimed fuel economy of more than 20 km/l. However, in the price segment of more than Rs 10 lakh, fuel economy is not the most important issue for the buyers, and the demand mostly driven on luxury and brand value of the car.

Wrong engine for the Altis. 1.4 TDI is to small. Should have been a 1.8 TDI Manual or a 2.0 TDI auto.
