This year, Toyota Motors gave a facelift to its charismatic Corolla Altis while Skoda brought in its new-generation Octavia. Both the cars are decently loaded with comfort and convenient features. Falling in the segment of mostly chauffeur-driven cars, the Toyota and Skoda sedan carry adequate traits to continue their global legacy. It’s the reliability, durability and their respective badges which make them one of the most sought-after sedans worldwide. Between the two fresh offerings lies another executive sedan – the Hyundai Elantra. Let’s pit all the three cars against each other to know where each car stands. Scroll down to go deeper into the details.
Engines and Performance
Petrol Engine
Speaking of the Corolla Altis, it gets the same powerful 1.8-litre petrol motor while the Elantra and the Octavia entail a 2.0-litre and optional 1.4-litre or 1.8-litre engines, respectively. While the Octavia churns out top figures of 180PS and 250Nm from its larger pot, the Elantra stand second with 152PS and 192Nm while the Altis settles at the last spot with numbers of 140PS and 173Nm. All the cars are available with manual as well as automatic options. The mileage figures of the Toyota sedan read 14.3kmpl while the Octavia triumphs all with 16.8kmpl of fuel economy. The Elantra delivers 14.59kmpl with its manual version.
Diesel
The oil burners of the trio are quite different in their capacities: Corolla Altis – 1.4-litres, Octavia – 2.0-litres and Elantra – 1.6-litres. The higher capacity mill of the Octavia takes the crown with 143PS of power and 320Nm of torque. The Elantra comes second while the Corolla Altis rests at the third spot. Unlike the Octavia and the Elantra, there’s no automatic option in the diesel Altis. The Elantra leads the way in the fuel efficiency with figures of 22.54kmpl, while the Czech follows next with 21kmpl. The Toyota scores yet another last grade.
Dimensions
The Skoda Octavia beats the other two by being the longest, widest and the tallest sedan in the reckoning here. Though it has the least ground clearance (155mm), it boasts on the boot-space front (massive 590-litres). The Toyota Corolla Altis finally gains the top spot in terms of standing above the ground, at 175mm, while the Korean beau stands at a decent 165mm. While the Toyota and the Hyundai share the same figures of the wheelbase (2700mm), the Octavia shrinks down to 2688mm. That said, interior space would be certainly more in the other two as opposed to the Octavia.
Features
Since all three belong to the executive saloon’s segment, the features provided are decent and match the price point at which they are offered. The Hyundai Elantra offers front-seat ventilation – a boon in summers, alongside dual-zone climatic control. Offering a dual-zone climate control mechanism, the Octavia offers 12-way power adjustable driver’s seat while the Altis comes with automatic air-conditioning and eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat. The infotainment systems in the trio are touchscreen and connect most of the gadgets. The safety has been upped in the new Corolla Altis with seven SRS airbags whereas the Elantra and the Octavia offer six and eight, respectively.
Prices
The Toyota Corolla Altis’ prices start from Rs 15.87 lakh while Octavia’s prices start from Rs 15.83 lakh. The most aggressive pricing is done by Hyundai with the Elantra being the cheapest, by almost Rs 2.7 lakh, starting at Rs 12.99 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi. Given the present scenario, the Toyota leads the pack -- let’s see if the new avatar is able to further accelerate its sales or not.
