A couple of days before its launch, we managed to get a first-person look at the Toyota Glanza. How different is it from the Baleno?
Update: Toyota has launched the Glanza in India. To know more about its price, variants and features, head here.
Toyota will soon be launching its premium hatchback, the Glanza, in the country. While it is known that the Glanza is based on Maruti’s Baleno, Toyota has made some subtle changes to distinguish the two. The Glanza is manufactured alongside the Baleno by Maruti and will be sold and serviced by Toyota. Take a look at these fresh images we managed to capture after spotting the car at a Toyota dealership.
The front fascia of the Glanza bears a heavy resemblance to that of the Baleno. The bumper, headlamps and bonnet are all the same. Toyota has only made changes to the grille (which features more chrome in comparison to the donor car), atop which now sits a Toyota logo.
Just like the Baleno, the Glanza also sports an all-black interior. Toyota has made one tiny change though. The climate control switches sport a silver shade in the Baleno. This has been changed to dark grey in the Glanza. It offers the same 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system as the Baleno and features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it the first Toyota in India to offer the same. The system is called Smart Playcast. Its equipment list is pretty identical to the Baleno’s and appears to be based on the top two variants - the Zeta and Alpha - of the Maruti. Read in detail about it here.
It is powered by the same naturally-aspirated, 1.2-litre, BS6 petrol engines as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The base-spec G variant with the manual gearbox gets the Baleno’s latest 1.2-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine making 90PS and 113Nm, while the rest of the variants get the 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated engine that produces 83PS and 113Nm.
The Glanza can be had with either a manual or an automatic transmission. The automatic transmission is the same CVT unit offered with the 1.2-litre engine in the Baleno. The mild-hybrid engine comes with the same 5-speed manual as the recently updated Baleno.
The car’s keyfob is unlike the one that Maruti offers with the Baleno and is similar to other Toyota cars.
The boot space is similar to the Baleno’s (339 litres), and the Glanza even gets a lamp in the trunk like its Maruti counterpart.
Toyota will also offer a space saver spare tyre with the Glanza.
At the rear, the only difference between the two hatchbacks is the Toyota logo in the middle of the bootlid and the variant badge on the side.
Toyota’s version of Maruti Suzuki’s Baleno is set to be launched on June 6. We expect the Toyota Glanza to be priced from Rs 7.7 lakh. Check out our expected price story for detailed info. Meanwhile, stay tuned to CarDekho for more updates.
