The safety concerns by Toyota Motors was brought to attention from the government regulatory bodies and public as 64,000 and more complaints were filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The car recalls since 2000 have become quite common, when Congress issued the legislation for the safety defects after the Firestone tire recalls. The safety recalls on one hand cost them huge money it also puts the company's reputation at stake.

Toyota Motors has also been fined $48.8 million by the US government for the handling of the three recalls in 2004. Since then, Toyota takes keen interest in catering to the needs and complaints of the consumers.

Brian Lyons, Toyota spokes person, said that Toyota Motors is looking after the customers and the federal agencies. Toyota cars are fixing faults more quickly than the auto industry's average fixing of 72 per cent completion after more than one and a half year.

If looking at the graph, General Motors called back almost 4 million cars in 2010 while the Honda and Nissan called back more than 2 million trucks and cars. Chrysler called back around 1.5 million cars and Ford recalled around 500,000 cars. The official figures are yet to be released by the government.

As per the Transportation Department spokes person, the auto companies are recalling more cars which is a positive sign. The government's first priority is safety and with better coperation from the auto giants, it will help in restoring the issues faster.

Wade Newton, on behalf of Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers that includes auto companies like Toyota, Ford and General Motors said that auto makers are performing well in spotting issues related to safety and also acting on it.
