Toyota, the Japanese manufacturer has unveiled a new range of fuel saving engines that now provide fuel-efficiency of more than 10% over the current vehicles. This new 1.3-litre petrol engine runs on the Atkinson cycle closely associated with the hybrid engines. Moreover, the auto-maker has also unveiled 1.0-litre engine, manufactured with the joint efforts with Daihatsu.
According to the manufacturer, "Use of the Atkinson cycle provides an increased expansion ratio and reduces waste heat through a high compression ratio (13.5), resulting in superior thermal efficiency." Inside the cylinder, the distinctive intake port creates a strong vertical swirl of the air-fuel mixture which allows the engine to be about 15% more fuel efficient than the other ongoing power-trains.
However, in the 1.0-litre engine, Atkinson cycle is not used as it comes fitted with a similar intake port equipped with EGR system and high compression ratio. Apart from this, the engine also features start/ stop technology that in altogether makes the engine upto 30% more fuel-efficient than the current engine. It is expected that the manufacturer will introduce 14 new engine by the year 2015.
It's a good approach from Toyota, as the world keeps exhausting natural resources, a more fuel efficient engine is the future of upcoming cars!
