It was not only Japan that was struck by an earthquake and consequent Tsunami on March 11, but in fact it was the world economy at large that was hit. The repercussions and tremors were similarly felt by the world car manufacturers such as Honda, Toyota, BMW, Daimler Peugeot, Fiat and Volkswagen. Reason: Almost all these major industry leaders have their plants there or heavily dependent on Japan for the supply of car parts.

Following the hit, the auto majors declared outages and consequently production was hampered. This situation continued for almost two months and now after the unexpected recovery in Japan, companies such as Honda and Toyota have given signal that things would be back on track soon. As per recent reports, Toyota Motor Corp led the recovery and is said to have declared that it would soon restore supplies of its top selling Toyota Prius to a maximum of 70 percent in the next few months. In order to operate in full swing Toyota Motors needs around 12,000 units per month but since the production units in Japan were badly affected the capacity came down to a 30 percent. Now with the restoration work in full swing, a 60-70 percent capacity would be restored.

As per fresh estimates, with the production back to almost normal, Toyota would be able to meet the rising demand for the hybrid Toyota Prius. If there would have been supply similar to last year, Toyota would have sold double the number of cars it sold last year, said sources. Basically, Toyota witnessed a higher demand for the Toyota Prius gasoline-electric model after the rise in fuel prices. However, it is expected that if the current pace of restoration in Japan, Toyota would soon bring things back to normal and waiting customers would soon get their Toyota.
