Japanese auto-giant, Toyota will recall a select lot of its premium sedan Corolla sold in India. The recall will be done as per the company's decision to sort out the defective airbags problems in about 17.3 lakh Toyota vehicles globally. Toyota in joint venture with Kirloskar Group has been doing its operations in India, and said that the recall will be applied on Corolla cars produced between January 2003 and June 2003 in the country.
Speaking to PTI, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) spokesperson said,"In line with the recall announced by Toyota Motor Corporation globally, TKM through its authorised dealers will contact the affected vehicle owners. He further added that the company has yet to receive any complain regarding the problem of the Corolla. "TKM will conduct this campaign on a voluntary basis," the official said, adding it will be rectified free-of-cost.
However, the company spokesperson did not mention the number of vehicles that will be recalled in India. The company is yet to finalise the complete lot for this recall exercise. The spokesperson also said that the Corolla models which will be recalled were assembled in India in 2003 between January and June only. Talking about the problem, TKM spokesperson said that the front passenger airbags could have been assembled with improperly manufactured inflator propellant wafers. This improper manufactured propellant wafers could rupture the inflator and could cause abnormal operation of airbag in a crash.
Not just in India, Toyota Motor Corporation is recalling 17,30,000 units of vehicles across the globe including Corolla, Corolla Fielder, Tundra, Yaris, Camry, Avensis, Vios besides some other models. Similarly, the two other Japanese auto-giants - Honda and Nissan are also recalling their cars to fix the airbag problem, however in this case, Indian models of their cars will not come under recall process.
Honda Cars India spokesperson said,"India is not affected by the global recall of Honda." Honda today launched its first ever diesel car Amaze in India, and hopes to revive its lost market sales. When the same question was asked to Nissan, its official said, "No, none of the models sold or manufactured in India are part of this lot."
