It is much more efficient and cleaner than plain CNG
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft order seeking suggestions on the inclusion of hydrogen-enriched CNG (HCNG) as an automobile fuel. This would lead to an amendment to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1979.
The automotive world is on the brink of serious change and it's about time. Several alternative sources of power are the subject of research while a few have even been employed. Out of these, CNG has turned out to be the most viable option, especially since it has been seamlessly employed in the country’s infrastructure.
What is HCNG?
HCNG is a blend of hydrogen in compressed natural gas. In composition figures, the fuel mixture consists of 18 percent hydrogen. The blend can be used in heavy-duty CNG vehicles after minor engine optimisation. Initial tests have shown that the use of HCNG can lower carbon monoxide (CO), methane, and total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions. It is also better than CNG with regards to specific fuel consumption.
Another advantage of HCNG is that it can be easily incorporated into CNG pipelines and bus depots. The initial pilot test will mostly take place in Delhi with 50 buses retrofitted with HCNG kits. Delhi could be chosen due to its vast network of CNG buses, pumps and the existing CNG infrastructure.
The ministry draft is open to suggestions from the public and stakeholders. Comments and opinions can be sent to the Joint Secretary (MVL), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, by email or post within 30 days of issuance of the notice. For more information on this draft, head here. Recently, the ministry had also issued a notice suggesting the use of hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles.
