Volkswagen will be jumping onto the compact sedan bandwagon with the Ameo, later this year. To give prospective customers a feel of the vehicle, Volkswagen will be conducting roadshows from 12 May to 2 July, across seventeen cities including metros such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata.
Starting May 12, the German automaker will accept bookings for the Ameo, across all dealerships in the country, for a token amount of Rs. 25,000. The compact sedan will lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze, Tata Zest, and the Hyundai Xcent.
On the occasion of this announcement, Mr. Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars said, “Volkswagen Ameo is a truly special carline designed specifically for our Indian consumers. With the Ameo, we seek to amplify our Volkswagen India family and reach out to customers in the Tier II & III markets, offering them the best of Volkswagen. To digitize the customer interface and facilitate the bookings, we are also launching a mobile application for the benefit of interested customers. Through the Ameo, we cater to the needs of the discerning Indian customer, by introducing superior safety, build quality and drivability, in the dynamic compact sedan segment. WWe are very excited to take the Ameo to our customers across India, and look forward to strengthening our ties with prospective and current buyers in these markets.”
The Ameo slots in between the Polo and the Vento. It borrows the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines that power the other two. Volkswagen will be offering a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox paired with the diesel engine, which will be unique to the Ameo in its class. Features include a chilled glovebox, touchscreen infotainment system, cruise control and rain-sensing wipers among others. On the safety front, dual airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) come as standard across the range.
Prices are expected to start at around Rs. 6.0 lakh for the base petrol variant. The top-spec diesel automatic could cost a smidge under Rs. 10 lakh, ex-showroom.
