Volkswagen’s much anticipated compact sedan, the Ameo, has been showcased at the Indian Auto Expo 2016. The car was unveiled on Feburary 2nd and has been spied on a couple of times. Its cues are largely based on the Polo hatchback. Though, there are a couple of things that distinguishes it with from its siblings, but one needs to observe so very closely. The car will compete against major volume turners like the Swift Dzire, Hyundai Grand i10 and Ford Figo Aspire.
The car looks like a squeezed-in version of its elder sister Vento. Leave aside the similar front, the side, wheels and window lines is also shared with Polo. The rear is where the biggest difference lies, courtesy the sub 4-meter constraint, but the roof still drops neatly into a stubby boot, unlike Swift Dzire. The stocky boot-lid has nothing new to offer, except for the deep red taillamps.
Maintaining its safety standard, Volkswagen has standardised the ABS, dual front airbags and EBD across the entire variant lineup. The German manufacturer has laid the interiors in a combination of black and beige, which seems to be lifted from the Vento. Ameo gets a considerable amount of gizmos like the infotainment system, flat bottom multi-function steering wheel, digital driver information cluster and segment first cruise control. The car also carries sufficient space for all five passengers, as conveyed by Volkswagen.
To haul the Volkswagen Ameo, the manufacturer has provided it with the same 1.2-litre petrol motor producing 74 bhp, while the diesel one is the 1.5-litre TDI which churns out 88.7 bhp of power. Transmission duties would be done with a 5-speed manual and a DSG automatic gearbox.
