Volkswagen is on a mission to revamp its image after the diesel-gate scandal. In India, it has the perfect weapon to do so -- the sub-four-metre sedan Ameo . Volkswagen has fully packed this baby sedan with features that belong to the segment above it, not to mention the build quality that comes with the German engineering and which is visible in all of its other models. To market these segment-first features, the carmaker has started a campaign of videos with the tagline: “Volkswagen Ameo, German engineering with an Indian heart”.
These videos boast of the rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors with camera and cruise control the car has been endowed with. All these features are new to the segment and set the bar higher. Other interesting attributes include front and rear one-touch power windows, key controlled windows, touchscreen infotainment system, rain-sensing wipers, rear AC vents and front fog lamps with static cornering lights.
The car was revealed to the world in India just before the Auto Expo. It continues on the same design lines as the Polo and the Vento, leaning slightly more towards the Polo. Even the engine options are a carry forward from the hatchback. Inside, the cabin looks like the Vento with the recently introduced touchscreen infotainment system, which features MirrorLink that enables you to replicate your android smartphone on the car’s touchscreen.
The Ameo car features a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder MPI petrol engine which produces 75PS of power and 110Nm of torque. The second engine is the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TDI diesel that churns out 90PS of power and 230Nm of torque. Transmission duties are taken care of by a five-speed manual or a DSG automatic gearbox. The petrol variant will be launched first in a couple of months. The diesel, however, will take time and will be launched later.
Volkswagen has loaded the car with features and, if priced right, this might very well usher in the new image of Volkswagen in India. Do read our Volkswagen Ameo first look to get our first impressions about the car. Stay tuned for more updates on the Ameo and for news about the launch.
