If certain reports are to be believed, Volkswagen will launch only the petrol variant of the Ameo, at least initially. The compact sedan will be powered by the tested 1.2-litre petrol motor that also powers its hatchback sibling, the Polo. Though there are rumours that Volkswagen will directly bring the updated 1.5-litre diesel mill into the Ameo, details regarding it are yet to be verified.
Volkswagen unveiled the Ameo just a day before the Indian Auto Expo 2016. The car is exactly the Polo, with added boot space. While the car shows segment-first cruise control and rain-sensing wipers, other important features include a reverse parking camera, a touchscreen infotainment system and electrically folding mirrors. It has been spied several times while testing since then.
The delay in the introduction of the diesel mill in the Ameo is also attributed to the dieselgate scandal. Volkswagen is introducing several changes to make its diesel engines, which were at the heart of the problem, comply with emission norms.
The Ameo will be competing with some of the heavyweights like the Swift Dzire, the new Honda Amaze and the Ford Figo Aspire. The carmaker is likely to price the product competitively, given the cut-throat competition it has to face. The launch date is not decided yet, but deliveries are pegged to start from July 2016.
