The absence of the Volkswagen Up! from the 2012 Indian Auto Expo was a bit surprising. Though instead of this car, Volkswagen displayed another stylish car idea through the XL1 diesel hybrid, a car which has been designed with a single motive of pressing the fuel to deliver maximum efficiency in terms of mileage. The performance is so good that the car provides an unbelievable mileage of 60 km per litre. The most important point to be noted here is that the Volkswagen Up! could be a hybrid by using the diesel motor from the XL1 model.

Even though a completely electric model of the Volkswagen is already present in the market, a diesel hybrid alternative may soon be launched in the small car segment. The launch would most likely be made during the Geneva Motor exhibition next month. The Volkswagen Up diesel hybrid would be having an 800cc diesel engine having two cylinders, which is a concept that is inspired by the XL1. The twin cylinder engine is a modified downsized alternate of the TDI engine with a capacity of 1.2 litres used in the cars like Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia.

The 800 cc engine is expected to provide a highest power of 48Bhp and the highest torque output will be 112Nm. The engine also makes use of a balancing shaft that is used to balance the vibes that the double cylinder motor will produce due to its inbuilt design. The engine will further be attached to a 7 speed manual DSG double clutch gearbox. To provide the hybrid features to the VW Up! an electrical engine 26 Bhp would be coupled with the TDI engine and provide the propelling. The VW Up! is being anticipated to be one of the most efficient cars globally in terms of fuel consumption. Moreover, with the increasing demand for diesel engines in European countries, it is quite possible that Volkswagen will use this engine for a complete diesel variant of the Up!
