Volvo cars are considered to be amongst the safest cars in the world. Adding to its credibility is the Euro NCAP safety ratings that Volvo V40 received. With the highest score, the new hatchback becomes one of the safest cars in the world. Before this, the Volvo S60 as well earned the highest score at the IIHS- Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s overlap frontal crash test that happened earlier this month.

The Volvo V40 that is to go on sale in Australia in early 2013 has set two new records in 3 crash tests and scored the maximum in the safety assist category, achieving an overall 5-star safety rating. The highlight of the Volvo V40 is the unmatchable (read as considerably unheard of till yet) 88% pedestrian protection score with the worlds first under-the-bonnet airbag system. This system detects the pedestrians and lifts the bonnet to inflate an airbag to cover the base of the windscreen and A-pillars and also absorbs some of the impact.

The Euro NCAP, commenting on the airbag said that the system worked well with the bonnet and airbag providing a good protection in all probable areas that can be struck by pedestrians. The V40 is the first car to score maximum points in this area.  Another safety system present in the V40 is the pedestrian-detecting autonomous emergency braking system (AEB System) which applies brakes automatically if it senses a chance of a pedestrian getting hit by a car.

The V40 scores an amazing 98% in the adult occupant protection test. It offers good protection to knees and femurs of the passengers sitting in the front. Further it provides a good protection to all body parts of the passengers in the front, that can be impacted in case of a side-collision as well. In fact the V40 scored the highest in the side pole tests where the head restraints and seat provided extreme protection against whiplash in rear-end collisions.

The lowest score that V40 received was a 75%. The rating was in the passenger protection test even though during the test it was found that both test dummies remained properly contained and restricted in a way so as to minimize the risk of contact with car’s interiors. The Renault Clio scored an 89% in this round. The Volvo V40 gets the most advanced City Safety autonomous braking system which operates at speeds up to 50kmph which in the more expensive models was 30kmph earlier.
