X1 2015-2020 sDrive 20d xLine Review
Overview:
BMW India, one of the highly acclaimed automobile brands, has launched the facelifted version of its X1 model at the 2016 Auto Expo. It is available in four variants of which, BMW X1 sDrive 20d xLine is a mid range trim that is priced at around Rs. 34.5 lakh. With this revised edition, the firm is expecting to improve its market share while competing with the likes of Audi A3 and Mercedes Benz GLA Class. This model generated a lot of interest among car enthusiasts even before its launch, and we at CarDekho, would certainly say that it is living up to all our expectations with its significant features and impressive overall performance.
Pros:
1. Luxurious interiors filled with various interesting aspects that add to the passenger convenience.
2. Fuel efficiency. Its diesel engine returns more mileage compared to what others are offering in this segment.
Cons:
1. Steering becomes heavy at low speeds, and demands more effort from the driver.
2. Navigation Plus system. It is present only in the top end variant.
Stand Out Features:
1. Its 8-Speed Steptronic Automatic Sport transmission aids in delivering exceptional performance.
2. The HiFi loudspeaker system with 7-speakers and 205 Watts output gives the best audio experience.
Overview:
X1 is a stunning SUV from BMW that was introduced in the year 2009. This mid range trim carries a 2.0-litre, turbocharged diesel engine under the bonnet that has 4-cylinders. With good top speed and power output, this is a sure shot winner in this segment. In the latest update, it has undergone several modifications thus, making it better than its predecessor. In terms of safety, it has all the features that are present in the top end variant. Its exteriors are now revised and the increased dimensions further add to its muscular stance. Coming to its interiors, everything is just remarkable, right from the design theme, usage of quality materials and innovative attributes that leaves you with an amazing driving experience.
Exterior:
With huge proportions, and striking design, this SUV will certainly leave you impressed at the very first glance itself. In the front facade, the kidney shaped radiator grille with aluminium slats remain the key highlight. The hood is imposing with character lines and company's insignia on it. The solid bumper below comes with an under body protection, while the couple of fog lamps further adds to its style. The large headlight cluster looks trendy and features LED headlamps as well as daytime running lights. On the sides, we can see the B-pillars in black color, chrome window sills and Aluminum satiated roof rails. Fitted to the wheel arches are a set of 18 inch, Y-spoke style light alloy wheels that are covered with radial tubeless tyres of size 225/50 R18. The rear end too looks as attractive as the other profiles with some interesting elements. The taillight clusters in 3D icon design incorporates LED lamps and turn indicators, whereas its twin exhaust pipes get neat chrome plating. Under body protection is present for the rear bumper as well in black and silver matt finish. In addition to these, it also features a sporty spoiler above the windscreen and a well designed tailgate that is embossed with the popular company's logo.
Interior:
This latest model will surprise you with its plush interior section that packs in various sophisticated aspects. The head and leg room in both front and rear cabin is quite sufficient. Housed on the well designed dashboard is a multifunction sport leather steering wheel with black stitching and chrome decorative finisher. The instrument cluster displays a number of notifications besides carrying a speedometer and tachometer. Also integrated to the dashboard are rectangular shaped air vents, and a glove box with enough space for storing things. The panorama glass roof is one of its interesting attributes that allows fresh air and warm sunlight inside. You can also switch to the BMW ConnectedDrive system that comes with BMW Apps and supports Bluetooth with handsfree as well as audio streaming functions. It also gets the iDrive with 16.5cm display screen with AM/FM radio featuring eight buttons. Apart from these, the cabin also includes dual zone automatic air conditioner, ambient lighting, centre armrest with two cup holders, rear foldable and front adjustable seats.
Performance:
X1 is powered by a 2.0-litre, Twinpower turbocharged diesel engine that comes with 1995cc displacement capacity. This motor has the ability to churn out a peak power of 190bhp at 4000rpm along with 400Nm torque between 1750-2500rpm. It is incorporated with 4-cylinders, 16 valves and based on a dual overhead camshaft valve configuration. This mill is paired to an 8-speed steptronic automatic transmission gearbox and integrated with a common rail direct injection system. This helps in returning a maximum mileage of around 20.68 kmpl on the highways. And this machine reaches a top speed of about 222 Kmph while accelerating from 0-100 Kmph in just 7.8 seconds. On the other hand, it comes installed with the BMW EcoPro mode that enhances efficiency of the engine while reducing emissions.
Ride & Handling:
As far as suspension is concerned, it gets an efficient sports suspension system to both its front and rear axles that makes the drive free from jerks and comfortable as well. An electric power steering system is on offer with servotronic assist function. This lets you drive through any road condition effortlessly while keeping this huge machine under control. In terms of braking, all its four wheels come fitted with a robust set of disc brakes that deliver exceptional performance. Advanced systems like ABS and EBD are also on the offer that further enhances this mechanism and prevents it from skidding as well especially, when you need to apply sudden brakes.
Safety:
In this mid range variant, you will find several important features that give maximum security when you are on the journey. It is offered with a total of six airbags that protects you from any risk of injury, and there is electronic vehicle immobilizer that prevents any unauthorized entry into the vehicle. Aspects such as the cornering brake control, brake assist and ABS play a crucial role in taking the braking performance to next level. Besides these, it also has ISOFIX child seat mounting, run flat indicator, seat belts with pretensioners and warning triangle in the list.
Verdict:
We at CarDekho, would say that this mid range trim definitely stands out in terms of overall performance, security standards and mileage as well especially, when compared with its competitors. But on the other hand, it lags behind with its low ground clearance and difficult handling in certain conditions. Except for these limitations, everything is good about this particular model and you can definitely consider it buying.

- Good SUVBMW X1 was my first choice as an SUV. But, I wasn't sure if this BMW will match my expectations. So I took the test drive. The experience is unforgettable, gear changes quickly and power transmits in just a blink of an eye. I wasn't expecting that being the smallest SUV of the BMW, X1 will ever be able to deliver the top-notch driving experience.Read MoreWas this review helpful?YesNo
- Great CarMany people here have pointed that X1 is small from the inside and that rear seats are not comfortable. But, I'll say that, for a daily commute, there?s no other SUV better than this. It's fuel-efficient and easy to handle. With X1, it requires no efforts to overtake the traffic. The interiors of the X1 is designed smartly and sensibly to keep you at the centre of comfort. However, if you are particularly looking for an SUV for travelling long distances. Then I will recommend you to go for its big brother X3.Read MoreWas this review helpful?YesNo
- Best CarAfter taking the test drive of BMW X1 last week, I can say that X1 is far better than its rivals. It's something that is made for Indian drivers and especially for Indian roads. BMW X1 is value for money, and with this SUV, you'll get everything. From the powerful engine to the affluent and cosy interiors, X1 shares a lot of features with its siblings. However, there is one thing that I didn't like, and that's the second-row seats. The space is tight back there for healthy and tall persons like me. But, when on the driver seat and passenger seat, I can say that there?s enough headroom and legroom for tall and healthy people.Read MoreWas this review helpful?YesNo
