Our market has recently seen a massive growth in the utility vehicle segment. This growth can be credited majorly to the emerging segment of Compact SUV’s. Renault has seen a lot of success with the Duster in this segment and Hyundai’s latest entry- Creta has also been crunching good numbers for the Korean carmaker. New car launches every month add to the confusion of a car buyer. Here’s a list of utility vehicles that you should be considering under Rs.15 lacs.
Price- Rs. 6.8 - 10.5 Lacs
EcoSport has been a flat-out success for Ford ever since its inception and the company still sells 3000+ units per month of this compact SUV. EcoSport comes with 3 engine options - 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre diesel, and a 1.0-litre Ecoboost. I.0-litre Ecoboost has been awarded the engine of the year award last year and produces more horsepower than its elder 1.5-litre sibling. EcoSport has also been updated recently and now features DRL’s and also gets more power in the 1.5-litre diesel unit. This SUV caters perfectly to everyday urban usage and has peppy engines which are sufficient for your weekend getaways. Additionally, the compact dimensions ensure hassle free drive in busy city traffic.
Price- Rs. 8.3 - 13.5 Lacs.
Duster is a very capable vehicle in this segment plus it also has an all-wheel drive variant. There are 3 engine options- a 1.6-litre petrol (103bhp), a 1.5-litre diesel (84bhp) and a 1.5-litre diesel (108bhp). Renault terms it as an ‘Urban SUV’ and this model has helped them to earn a firm foothold in our market. We can also expect an AMT gearbox in the Duster by early 2016.

Hyundai has super succeeded its own expectations with this SUV and now the automatic variant of Creta has a 6-month waiting variant. Creta borrows its engines from Verna i.e a 1.6-litre diesel, 1.4-litre diesel and a 1.6-litre petrol. These engines produce 126bhp, 89bhp and 121bhp respectively. Creta is rich on features and has a good aggressive stance which makes this SUV a very tempting buy.

Price – Rs. 7.0 - 9.2 Lacs
Mahindra tried its hand in the compact SUV segment with Quanto initially, didn't get the numbers and now TUV3OO is Mahindra’s second shot in the same segment. Powering this sub-4 meter SUV is a 3-cylinder mHawk engine which is a leaned out version of Scorpio’s 2.2-litre unit. This 1.5-litre unit produces 81bhp of power and has good low end torque on offer due to its dual stage turbocharger. TUV3OO also offers an AMT gearbox which will surely attract many buyers.

From the last 13 years, Mahindra Scorpio has been a hot favorite among SUV buyers, thanks to its butch looks and off-roading capabilities which is a boon on Indian roads. This SUV has a choice of two diesel engine options, 2.5-litre m2 DiCR that produces 75 bhp and a more refined 2.2-litre mHawk engine which churns out 120 bhp of power. Scorpio was updated thoroughly in 2014 and it got a new platform, chassis, transmission, features and redesigned interiors.
