After its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show early this year, the 2014 Polo facelift is now set to hit the Indian roads soon. Unlike most of the regular facelifts, the updated German hatch will offer much more than just a sticker-job. Apart from some cosmetic modifications inside-out, Polo will be carrying changes under the hood too.
With no major change to the over-all design, some minor detailing tweaks can be easily noticed. New front bumper with larger black air dam, redesigned head-fog lamps and the front grille getting a single bar of chrome, as compared to the existing model's three, these are the most prominent changes of the lot at the front. Sides profile of the car remains virtually unchanged, while the rear of the car carries some subtle tit-bits such as more detailed tail-lights and tweaked bumper. On the inside, the dash almost remains the same with some premium garnishing served with it. An all-new steering wheel with audio mounted controls and matte silver detailing on the centre console are the main additions to the cabin, while the infotainment system and upholstery are same as the on-going model.
The biggest turn-around in this new Polo comes from the mechanical front. The out-going 1.6-litre TDI diesel motor is most likely to be replaced by a newly developed 1.5-litre TDI engine. This downsizing of engine, will enable the hatch to enjoy excise duty rebate, provided to cars under 4-metres of length and with an engine capacity below or equal to 1.2-litre for petrol and 1.5-litre, for diesel cars. If reports are to believed, the new 1.5-litre TDI engine will be available in two states of tune, namely - 89bhp and 104bhp. The lower tuned motor will come with the standard models, whereas the 104 bhp will power the Polo GT TDI. Furthermore, all other engine options available on the current model are expected to remain same.
With no official words on pricing as-well-as on the launch, we expect the new Polo to arrive in a month or two at a dealership near you. As far as the pricing is concerned, the regular Polo (petrol & diesel both) will most likely carry the same price tag, but the GT TDI of the hatch might see a bit price cut due to excise duty perks.
