The updated Endeavour’s 3.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine continues to rule the roost in the segment just like before. It is the most powerful and the torquiest amongst its peers. The Alturas G4 comes in second when talking about power, while the AT variant of the Fortuner is second in terms of torque. The Isuzu’s only claim to fame in this list is its 3.0-litre engine, which is second only to the updated Endeavour in terms of displacement. All the SUVs are available with a 2WD drivetrain or a 4WD drivetrain.
FEATURES
Safety: All SUVs in this comparison are well equipped in terms of driver and occupant safety. They all have ABS with EBD, hill-start assist, traction control, electronic stability control and hill-descent control as well. The updated Endeavour even in the base spec gets six airbags, while the top-spec variant gets seven airbags. The only safety feature missing is ISOFIX mounts in the big Ford, something that is offered in all the others SUVs.
The Alturas G4 offers a segment-leading nine airbags, while the Fortuner has seven airbags and the MU-X gets six. Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are available on the Alturas G4, Fortuner and 2019 Endeavour, but not with the MU-X.
Comfort and Convenience features: The top-spec Ford Endeavour boasts of the most goodies in this segment which include an electric panoramic sunroof, electric tailgate and semi-auto parallel park assist as well to identify empty parking spots and turn in automatically.
The Mahindra Alturas G4 gets ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control with blowers in the second and third row, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, 360° surround view camera and a smart automatic electric tailgate. It even has a feature called the ‘easy access mode’ which moves the front seats backwards when you open the door.
Meanwhile, the Toyota Fortuner gets dual-zone automatic climate control and an electric tailgate with a memory function and jam protection. The MU-X has climate control with cabin vents for all three rows and separate blower controls for the second row of seats and is the least feature-rich of all these SUVs.
Off-road ability: All the SUVs compared here have something in common - off-roading ability. The 2019 Endeavour gets a host of off-road modes and the Alturas, Fortuner and MU-X are also equipped with a low-range gearbox and all three can switch between 4WD and 2WD on the fly.
Seating: The Ford Endeavour comes with tip and slide mechanism for second-row seats. They can also be reclined and slid forwards and backwards. The third row seats can also be folded down in a 50:50 split. And this can be done electrically.
The Mahindra Alturas G4’s second-row seats have a recline function but do not slide. They can be folded 60:40 split and can be tumbled forward to access the third row of seats. The final row of seats can be split-folded 50:50 or flat down to offer more luggage space when not in use.
In the Fortuner, the second row seats have one-touch tumble functionality along with the ability to slide and recline. Even the third row seats can recline in the Toyota and are available with a 50:50 split.
In the MU-X, the second row seat has a one-touch tumble feature for easy ingress and egress into the third row. The third-row seats can be manually folded down to increase boot space, in 50:50 split fashion.
Other common features: These are all premium SUVs that cost north of Rs 25 lakh. So they are bound to have a few features that are common across the range. Features like electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs, touchscreen infotainment system, climate control with vents and controls for the second row of seats, 60:40 split rear seats, power-adjustable driver seat, steering-mounted audio controls and cruise control are available as standard on the 2019 Endeavour, Alturas G4, Fortuner and MU-X.
