Key Takeaways
-
The starting price of the Tata Harrier is the second-highest among its competitors. Its base variant costs a lakh more than the base-spec Mahindra XUV700 diesel.
-
The most expensive entry-level diesel option here is the MG Hector, which starts from Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom). Its base variant is priced similar to the mid-spec AX5 of the XUV700 and HTX Plus of the Kia Seltos diesel.
-
The Hyundai Creta is the most affordable diesel SUV in this list, closely followed by the Seltos, with prices starting from Rs 12 lakh.
-
The top-end diesel manual Harrier is the most expensive, and the only one which crosses the Rs 25 lakh mark. It is over Rs 1.5 lakh costlier than the top-spec diesel manual variant of the Mahindra XUV700 AX7. However, we are not considering it here as it only comes as a 7-seater, making it a closer rival to the Tata Safari instead.
-
The Tata Harrier facelift gets a 170PS 2-litre diesel engine, same as the MG Hector and with the same output, while the Mahindra XUV700 comes with a 185PS 2.2-litre diesel engine. The smaller Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos come with a 116PS 1.5-litre unit.
-
For transmission options, the Harrier, Hector, XUV700 and Creta get a 6-speed manual, but the Seltos comes with an iMT option (manual without clutch pedal).

It is important to note that the updated Tata Harrier offers more as standard than its similarly sized rivals, and its top-end variant is better equipped overall as well.

Key Takeaways
-
Here, the Tata Harrier has the highest starting price, while the other diesel automatics are far more accessible. The entry-level XUV700 diesel-automatic undercuts it by over a lakh.
-
The base-spec Harrier diesel automatic is priced the same as the one-below-top GTX Plus diesel automatic variant of the Kia Seltos. The Korean compact SUV is the most affordable diesel-auto here, starting at Rs 18.20 lakh.
-
The MG Hector does not get an automatic transmission with its diesel engine.
-
The top-spec diesel automatic variant of the Hyundai Creta is affordable by Rs 80,000 compared to the base-spec Harrier automatic.

-
Easily crossing the Rs 25 lakh mark, the Harrier is the most expensive model in its top variant compared to all five-seater rivals here. The top-spec Mahindra AX7 is slightly more expensive, with the advantage of AWD, but is not being considered here as it is only offered as a 7-seater SUV.
-
All four models come with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission option.
-
Once again, we must factor in that the Harrier is better equipped at both ends of the diesel-automatic list of variants, compared to its 5-seater rivals.
