The car manufacturers launch their respective models with the hope to see a success. Sometimes they manage to bag an overwhelming success, while there are some instances when they miss their targets. Despite a sluggish growth in the car industry, there have been quite a bit of launches in 2011. Mahindra XUV 500, Hyundai Verna, new Maruti Swift, Skoda Rapid and Audi A4 are the examples of some smashing success stories of the year, while Hyundai Eon which was thought to make an everlasting impression in the country did not manage to meet the customers’ expectations.

The other new cars like Honda Brio, Maruti Kizashi, Ford Fiesta and Nissan Sunny were brought into the market with the hope to create a revolution, but however fate seem to have something else in store for these models. The new Hyundai Verna with the Fluidic design concept from the Korean car manufacturer did seem to work the magic in the country, while the same fluidic design lines did not garner as much sales for Hyundai Eon. Mahindra XUV 500 is an irrefutable success right from the beginning, who would have predicted a slight deviation from the Mahindra’s models would lead to a success the car manufacturer has never imagined. The Honda Brio, Nissan Sunny and the Hyundai Eon could be stated as the biggest misses of the year.

The year 2011 which began with a promising future just after recording a 25% growth in the car industry fell right on its face as it ventured into the second half. Despite a positive growth of 7% in the month of November the overall sales were quite flat. General Motors India President Karl Slym himself said that while until last year the demand for the petrol to diesel car ratio was 80:20, the situation just reversed in 2011. While the diesel car demand grew by 24%, the petrol car sales on the other hand slipped by 17.5% as compared to last year. The cars like Maruti Swift, Chevrolet Beat, Maruti Ritz and Toyota Etios Liva which are offered in both petrol and diesel fuel options, the diesel cars in India outsold the petrol variants by far with over 80% demand for the diesel variants. However, the market experts believe that the slowdown is going to be here for some time before the industry picks up to see a positive growth of 20-30% next year.
