BMW increases capacity, mulls on two-wheeler entry in Indian market

BMW, the German luxury carmaker has increased its production capacity to 5,400 units per annum at the Indian facility. BMW has also said that it will invest a fresh amount of Rs 70 crore by the year 2012. BMW is present in India through a wholly-owned subsidiary BMW India. The company also said that it is also considering its entry into the Indian two-wheeler market in the coming month. BMW India President, Andreas Schaaf was quoted saying that BMW Group is taking into new growth potential and will further increase its commitments in India. To this end, the company will  step up its investments in India. So far, BMW has invested around Rs 110 crore at its plant in Chennai. 

Schaaf also said that the Chennai plant  has recently raised its production capacity to 5,400 units annually on a single shift basis. He emphasized that the investment of Rs 70 crore will be done by the year 2012 for adding up more capacity over 5,400 units per year. He further said that the plant will be expanded structurally for increasing the production capacity further. An additional land of about 18 acres will be procured from Mahindra World City for this expansion. At present, the plant is spread over 21 acres of land.

About the future product launches of BMW, Schaaf commented that the company will expand its  product range in 2010-11. It will also plan on expanding its product line in the luxury segment. He further added that the launch of the new BMW X1 is scheduled in India by the end of  the year 2010. This new model will  be produced at the Chennai plant. The company has also introduced its new SUV X5 in both petrol and diesel variant which is priced between Rs 52.99 lakh and Rs 69.50 lakh.
