The list includes the new BMW 5 Series, Concept X2 and additional options for the 6 Series model range

Several cities across the globe conduct motor shows, with Paris, Sao Paulo and New York to name a few. However, automakers have to choose wisely which motoring event they need to showcase their offerings in. For 2017, BMW has decided that it will kick start the new year by showcasing its much-anticipated models at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Michigan. It will be held over 15 days, from January 8-22, 2017.

So what does the Munich-based auto giant have in store for us? It will include the world premiere of the new BMW 5 Series and the US premiere of the BMW Concept X2. Apart from these jaw-dropping beauties, the German automaker will also showcase the BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid, M550i xDrive and the 6 Series model range. The icing on the cake is that BMW ConnectedDrive will be presenting a selection of new services.

New BMW 5 Series

Riding on the remarkable success of the 5 Series which sold 7.9 million units worldwide, spanning six generations of the premium sedan, the seventh generation will go on sale in February 2017. The new-gen 5 Series is based on BMW EfficientLightweight design concept and weighs about 100kg less than its predecessor. Amongst a sea of features, the new 5 Series is slated to boast automated driving tech, which uses an on-board stereo camera, optional radar and ultrasound sensors.

A total of seven variants are in the pipeline for the upcoming 5 Series. The 530i will feature a new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 252PS of power and 350Nm of torque. The 540i also gets a new combustion chamber with 3.0-litres of cubic capacity, spread between six cylinders. It is tuned to produce 340PS of power and 450Nm of torque. Similarly, the diesel cousins,   520d and 530d, get new engines. The former will boast a 2.0-litre, four-pot motor which will develop 190PS of power and 400Nm of torque. The 530d will get a new 3.0-litre, six-pot mill, producing 265PS of power and 620Nm of torque.

Soon after the launch, BMW will add the most frugal, non-hybrid, variant of them all - 520d EfficientDynamics Edition. The 2.0-litre diesel motor will be mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The resultant CO2 emissions will be the lowest in its class, at 102g/km.

BMW 530e iPerformance

In March 2017, BMW will add a plug-in hybrid variant to the new 5 Series model range. The BMW 530e iPerformance is set up with the possibility of electric driving with zero local emissions. It offers the full wealth of BMW 5 Series driver assistance features - in all modes, including eDrive. While the high-tech electric motor has an output of 95PS and 250Nm of torque, the 2.0-litre combustion engine generates 184PS of power and 320Nm of torque. Combined together, the system will produce 252PS of power and 420Nm of torque. It will be the sixth model to carry the iPerformance tag after 225xe, 330e, X5 40e, X1 xDrive 25Le (exclusively sold in China), 740e and 740Le.

BMW M550i xDrive

Any BMW with an ‘M’ badge means that it is designed to be the best performance-driven car in its segment. And the new M550i, which will be launched in February 2017 as well, will be no different. It will be powered by a 4.4-litre, twin-turbo, V8 petrol engine, which will produce 462PS of power and a healthy 650Nm of torque. Coupled with BMW’s all-wheel drive xDrive system, the M500i will crack 100kmph from a standstill in 4 seconds flat. That means, the this massive family sedan can embarrass most sports cars out there.

BMW 6 Series Model Range

The German carmaker will add new items to 6 Series’ optional equipment list for spring 2017. These options will be available exclusively for the BMW 6 Series Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe. Customers can opt for the Sonic Speed Blue body paint, bi-colour, 20-inch, M light-alloy wheels and carbon fibre interior trim strips. These options were previously available for the three variants of the BMW M6 high-performance sports model.

BMW Concept X2

It was unwrapped in the month of September 2016 for motoring enthusiasts across the globe. In October 2016, it was showcased during the Paris Motor Show and BMW will take the gorgeous Concept X2 to Detroit in January 2017. Slated to kick start a new segment of SUVs, the Concept X2 tries to merge the design of a coupe in the body of a SUV. BMW’s new recipe in coupe-making has a distinctive character. Its large wheels and the familiar two-box design underlines its functional X model capabilities and its long wheelbase, stretched roofline, short overhangs and heavily forward-slanting C-pillar give the shape a sporty, low-slung feel.

BMW Connected: New features for the 5 Series

This tech was introduced in the US in March 2016 and in Europe in August 2016. BMW will present a digital platform designed to aid personal mobility. The new 5 Series will boast new features such as BMW Connected Onboard - a personalised start screen for every driver - and Remote 3D View, which enables customers to keep an eye on their beloved car via their smartphone. Additionally, BMW ConnectedDrive now includes a hazard preview feature, which is part of the Real Time Traffic Information service.
