BMW starts production of new generation X3 model

The leading Germany automaker BMW has started the production of its much anticipated second generation BMW X3 SAV model at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. At present, the company manufactures its popular SUVs and Z4 Sports Convertible models at this plant. The South Carolina plant of the company has been a center of expertize for the manufacturing of the X-series vehicles of the company and all of the X-series models of the company's global portfolio are built here. The BMW X3 model has been a very successful car for the company, globally. The first generation of this model was introduced in the year 2004 and the company has sold massive 600,000 units of this vehicle, so far.

After its launch in the Indian market, the new BMW X3 model will be competing with popular models of this price segment including Audi Q5. It is also speculated that the company will assemble this vehicle in the Indian market so that its cost can be decreased significantly. The model is expected to hit the Indian roads by the first quarter of the year 2011.

According to a statement given by Mr Josef Kerscher, President at BMW in Spartanburg, in a press release issued by the company in this regard, the launch of the new X3 will mark a historic moment for this plant and the company is confident that the BMW X3 is once again going to make its plant, a leader in the Sports Activity segment. According to company, the manufacturing of the new generation BMW X3 has created several hundred new jobs at this plant along with taking the total investment of the company at the South Carolina to $4.6 billion since 1992.
