It was a hot and humid afternoon on Saturday, the 1st of June. The clearing of Mumbai's High Street Phoenix Mall had been transformed into a test track. The Bavarian automobile company, BMW had it's 3 SUV, the X3, the X5 and the X6 on display.
After a short briefing by the BMW driving instructor we hopped into the respective cars ready to experience the course laid out in front of us. With guidance over a walkie talkie and balancing the throttle and break we could experience the ability of the 3 SUVs displayed overcome these obstacles with a natural ease.
With BMW X-ramps and obstacles like articulation humps and Inclines, the xDrive event provided existing as well as eager customers to experience the xDrive systems present on the X6, X5 and X3.
BMW calls these vehicles SAVs or "Sport Activity Vehicles." BMW claims that the xDrive is one of the most advanced 4-wheel drive systems in use today.
Though the track was small and only allowed the drivers to drive on 2 obstacles (articulation hump and incline), it did portray how capable these vehicles are for casual off-roading. The X-ramp was experienced as a passenger while one of the BMW driving experts drove the vehicle.
The BMW xDrive is an intelligent all-wheel drive system that keeps track of the driving situation and is constantly distributing and redistributing power smoothly between axles where it is needed the most. If one wheel is in the air, it will automatically brake that wheel and send power to the other wheels that have traction.
This is all done by the onboard computer. The driver just has to mind his line, his wheels and balance the amount of gas and braking required. It makes the whole going off-road experience slightly easier and relaxed.
In India the BMW xDrive all wheel drive system come standard in the BMW X3, X5 and X6.
