Since its transition to BS6, the XUV500 has only been available with a manual transmission

    • With the BS6 update, Mahindra had cut down 11 variants down to just four.

    • Three of the four variants get the AT option, with the base variant missing out.

    • The engine paired with it is the sole offering, 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which produces 155PS.

    • Mahindra offered the AWD option for the XUV500 MT and AT in the BS4 era, but scrapped it after the BS6 update.

In accordance with BS6 norms, the updated Mahindra XUV500 was launched in April this year. It got a cleaner version of the same engine and a reduction in variants. While it retained its features and looks, it missed out on an automatic transmission option. That, however, is no longer the case.

Available in three trims, Mahindra has introduced the option of a 6-speed torque converter with the XUV500. Compared to the manual variants, the automatic ones come at a premium of around Rs 1.21 lakh for each of the three trims. The base W5 variant misses out on the automatic gearbox altogether.

The automatic variants, like the 6-speed manual counterparts, are powered by the single 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine option. This unit produces 155PS and 360Nm. The XUV500 featured AWD in the manual and automatic variants during the BS4 era, but Mahindra has scrapped the drivetrain option since the BS6 update.

This arrival is better late than never, as Mahindra is set to launch the next-gen XUV500 by mid-2021. The current model locks horns with the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta as well as its direct rivals like the MG Hector and Tata Harrier.
